Job Purpose

In support of the University’s vision the Finance Office is transforming with a new integrated financial and HR system being implemented in 2019; in addition many of the structures, activities, policies and procedures for financial activity need to be changed to ensure that they are delivering what is required of a 21st century facilitative finance function in a very diverse and large organisation.

Following an internal promotion the role of Deputy Director of Finance will become vacant. The Deputy role is both strategic and operational and acts as a key contact point for all financial accounting and reporting matters as well as supporting strategic development. The postholder will have overall leadership and management responsibility for the Accounting division of the Finance Team; supporting, developing and monitoring the delivery of the University’s financial strategy.They will act as a key point of contact to provide expert advice on all financial accounting and reporting matters within the University as well as advising on strategic issues. They will have direct input into, and significant influence on, the University’s financial framework.They will report to Finance Director and deputise formally whenever required.

The Accounting Division provides comprehensive reporting and support services to the University and its Budget Centres.This includes Management Reporting; preparation of Budgets; long and short term forecasts and Business Plans; Financial Reporting; consolidation; subsidiary financial support, strategic advice and external financial returns. Involvement in new initiatives and projects is a key part of the support the team provides and often team members are involved in forming these from the outset.

Accounting is structured into 3 main areas each with a number of subsections and incorporates approx. 40 staff who report through three direct reports.

 

Person Specification

  • A qualified accountant with a recognized professional qualification and at least 5 years post-qualified experience
  • Experience of working at a senior level in a large and complex organisation.
  • The ability to analyse complex financial data, draw conclusions from it, use it to inform complex business judgments and to communicate the output to a diverse range of audiences balanced with the ability to contribute to, influence and lead the financial aspects of the strategic planning process, underpinning decisions with sound financial reasoning.
  • Approachable, balanced in view and considered in the evaluation of issues.
  • Is prepared to listen to alternative views on proposals/solutions to problems, and act on good advice to make informed decisions.
  • Has an ability to convert strategy into best operational practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to gain the trust of and credibility with senior managers, with the ability to communicate persuasively with people at all levels, verbally and in writing, including non-financial audiences.
  • Able to convey complex and technical information authoritatively and clearly to a diverse audience including Governors, senior executives, peers, direct reports and auditors.
  • Has an ability to forge effective internal partnerships with senior colleagues outside of the Finance Office.
  • Has the capability to adapt management style to working with teams of different sizes, compositions and seniority.
  • Confidence and ability to operate autonomously and with appropriate authority.
  • The ability to lead, manage and motivate a large team of staff, empowering staff to deliver.
  • Ability to anticipate, plan and promote change, taking a lead role in driving change.
  • Appreciation of and empathy with the HE sector and its strategic challenges and environment.
  • The intellectual depth to command respect amongst academic colleagues and the personal qualities to work effectively in partnership with academic staff, including at a senior level.
