Marie Sklodowska Fellow – Zero and Ultra-Low-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Fixed term appointment up to 36 months

Salary range: £31,042 (without family) to £34,606 (with family) subject to bi-annual review due to exchange rate.

It is possible to perform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy experiments in zero-and-ultralow (ZULF) magnetic fields (of the order of nanoTesla or less). An international consortium of nine research groups has been awarded an EU-supported research grant for an International Training Network in this exciting frontier area (see www.zulf.eu). The group of Prof Malcolm Levitt at the University of Southampton, UK, is one of the teams. We will be combining nuclear hyperpolarization experiments with ZULF-NMR. The aim is to develop and demonstrate new spectroscopic tools for imaging and spectroscopy. Applications are expected in clinical medicine, biology, biochemistry, and materials science. 

The magnetic resonance research section at the University of Southampton, UK, has access to a wide variety of state-of-the-art magnetic resonance instruments including NMR and EPR spectrometers, as well as hyperpolarization technologies such as dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP).

A 3-year position for a Marie Sklodowska Fellow is available in the group of Malcolm Levitt, supported by the ZULF International Training Network. The position starts on 1 Oct 2018. All nationalities are eligible, but this position is only open to candidates who (1) have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before 1 Oct 2018 (2) have no PhD degree, and (3) will not have been a researcher for longer than 4 years at the time of taking up the position. The candidate will obtain their PhD during their employment as a Marie Sklodowska Fellow. This PhD may be awarded by their host institution, providing that they work in Southampton for the first year of their employment.

The Marie Sklodowska Fellow position will involve travel and collaboration with other members of the ZULF consortium. The successful candidate should have a degree in physics or physical chemistry and research experience in quantum theory and/or nuclear magnetic resonance. Experience in one or more of the following areas is especially desirable: Low-field NMR; Variable-field NMR; Parahydrogen-enhanced nuclear polarization.
