The UFS Qwaqwa Campus is the second largest of the three sites of delivery of the University of the Free State located in the Eastern Free State and is surrounded by the picturesque sandstone Maluti mountains in Phuthaditjhaba. The Campus has experienced rapid growth in enrolment in the last five years with a parallel increase in its research focus. The widening focus requires an energetic academic and research leader to help the University achieve on its Institutional Transformation Plan as a vital link to the University’s Strategic Plan, amongst other key initiatives
The successful candidate will report directly to the Campus Principal and indirectly to the Vice Rector: Academic, Vice Rector: Research, Registrars and the Centre of Teaching and Learning. He/She will be a member of Senate, amongst various other committees on which she/he will be expected to serve.
Duties and responsibilities:
Provide administrative leadership and general management in the following areas: Student Academic Services; Library and Information Services; Examination Division
Responsible for academic planning and development.
Responsible for co-ordinating all campus graduations.
Lead and support research development.
Provide strategic leadership for the recently launched Afro Montane Research Unit.
Work closely with the local community, business, government and other relevant organisations.
Work closely with various local and international research linkages.
Utilise knowledge and experience gained to strengthen engaged research initiatives.
Collaborate closely with Deans and Registars to ensure seamless delivery of service within relevant portfolios.
Develop and guide cohort of young academics and researchers.
Faculties Assistant Deans on Campus;
Other related matters as required to support the Campus Principal.
Proven academic and research track record.
Five (5) years’ high level experience in academic and research management.
Has a credible research record which allows UFS to consider the preferred candidate to be appointed at least on an Associate Professor. Candidates already on Professoriate level will be required to have these evaluated in terms of UFS criteria
Sound knowledge and understanding of university governance structures and academic trends in higher education.
Decision-making, supervisory, management and leadership skills
Term of office:
Five (5) years, with the possibility of re-appointment for a further term based on performance and operational requirements.
