Duties and responsibilities:

  • Operate the Pulsed Laser Deposition Fluorescence spectroscopy including lifetime measurements (FLS).
  • Analyse samples, plan and perform the analysis and do data interpretation.
  • Maintain and update research apparatus (PLD, FSL, PL and more).
  • Repair and replace broken parts during breakdowns and perform maintenance.
  • Perform laboratory work as required.
  • Conduct research that is aligned with the department’s Solid State Group.
  • Participate in the community service activities of the department.
  • Contribute to the general activities and administrative organisation of the department.

    Inherent requirements:

  • An honour’s degree in Solid State Physics.
  • A good academic record.
  •  

    Required competencies:

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to function well in the university’s richly diverse working environment.
  • Strong technical software knowledge, including hardware interfacing.
  • Skilled in operating a PLD system.
  • Skilled in operating a PL system.
  • Skilled in operating a FLS system.
  • Skilled in repairing and maintaining research apparatus.
  • Skilled in Luminescence materials.
  • Working knowledge of Photoluminescence, Electroluminescence, Auger Electron Spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.
  • Ability to perform data analysis and data interpretation.

    Recommendations

  • MSc in Solid State Physics.
  • Willing to enroll for a masters’ degree in Solid State Physics at the first available opportunity, if not already attained by the time of the appointment.
