Job Details

  • Engineering BTec or equivalent and significant relevant lab/workshop experience
  • A positive, willing and flexible attitude is essential
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to coordinate resources (materials, equipment and time) to meet needs and schedules. Able to accurately follow set protocols to, for example, produce consistent, quality samples.
  • Demonstrable experience in basic mechanical engineering workshop skills.
  • Experienced in maintaining and repairing equipment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use standard and material test equipment & methodologies, including data recording.
  • Good computer based skills and the ability to set up computer based equipment.
  • Basic electronic skills/knowledge desirable but not essential.
  • Work can at times be physically strenuous e.g. to make up soil test samples, so a good level of physical fitness is required.
  • Able to assemble large laboratory test rigs.
  • Ability to work both unsupervised and in a team. The latter is particularly important when constructing large apparatus.
  • Understanding/appreciation of health and safety issues.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake training in other activities and skills. For example:
  • Willingness to undertake electrical safety testing after appropriate training.
  • Able to drive fork-lift truck and to operate overhead crane, or willingness and capability to be trained/licenced.
  • Full UK driving licence required as it will be necessary to drive on University business.
  • To provide flexible support for the technical team within the School across a range of teaching and researchactivities, including Geotechnical and Highway; Public Health Engineering; Structural Engineering; Hydraulic & Wind Engineering and Infrastructure and Engineering Management.
  • To advise and assist staff and students in the setting up of experiments and to provide training in the use of a wide range of techniques and equipment.
  • The post may require occasional work on construction sites away from the University.
