The Botanical Garden is a strategic asset within the University which holds documented living plant collections used for research, education, conservation and public display. The garden also forms an integral part of local community life and tourism to Stellenbosch.

The University is seeking a dynamic Curator to guide the Botanical Garden’s future development and strategic contribution to the University.

 

Duties:

  • Operational and financial management of the Botanical Garden;
  • Strategic positioning of the Botanical Garden in the industry;
  • Fundraising projects to sustain and upgrade the facilities;
  • Effective staff management and development;
  • Improvement of facilities;
  • Expansion and documentation of plant collections;
  • Managing client relations.

 

Job Requirements:

  • A relevant qualification in Botany / Horticulture;
  • Sufficient experience in the management of a Botanical Garden;
  • Experience in scientific research and research support;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal management skills;
  • Thorough knowledge of the South African flora and enthusiasm for the conservation of it;
  • Good computer skills with a knowledge of data management, word processing, and other relevant software;
  • Experience in the management and recording of plant collections.

 

Recommendation:

  • Master’s degree in Botany / Horticulture;
  • Experience in the writing of funding proposals;
  • Good communication skills in English and Afrikaans;
  • Knowledge of marketing and tourism;
  • Experience with the implementation of business plans;
  • Knowledge of a third language.
