Position requirements

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent in computational linguistics/natural language processing/data science or a relevant subject area
  • Experience in scripting (e.g. in Python)
  • Practical experience of applying relevant skills and techniques (e.g. knowledge of corpus linguistic tools and techniques for linguistic analysis)
  • Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively, including ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully
  • Ability to work to agreed specifications, time and quality standards
  • Ability to deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Ability to work remotely from the research team
  • Ability to use creativity to analyse and interpret research data and draw conclusions on the outcomes
  • An interest in (EU) law and the impact of language on the development of law

 

Desirable

  • Good knowledge of corpus linguistics theories and methods
  • Knowledge of law/EU law/EU institutions
  • Experience of working in an interdisciplinary team

 

The University of Birmingham is seeking to hire a research associate to support the work of Dr Karen McAuliffe as part of a European Research Council (ERC) funded project on ‘Law and Language at the European Court of Justice’ (LLECJ) by carrying out (corpus) linguistic research on opinions of Advocates General from the European Court of Justice.

The LLECJ project examines the production of the multilingual jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) and investigates how that Court functions as a multicultural, multilingual organisation.
