The School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol wishes to recruit two lecturers. In line with the strategic development of our research and teaching programmes we seek to fill these posts with high calibre individuals who will contribute to a dynamic, ambitious and collegial environment that is at the forefront of intellectual developments within our interdisciplinary School. Successful candidates will be expected to evidence a strong commitment to teaching, research and administration. It is desirable if candidates have a strong global and/or international dimension to their work.

The School for Policy Studies leads in its fields of research. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) 80% of research in social work and social policy was rated world-leading or internationally excellent (Social Work and Social Policy), and our work in exercise, nutrition and health was ranked best in the country (Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism). In REF2021 we will again submit to both relevant Unit of Assessments (UoAs); it is anticipated that one Lecturer appointment will be included in our submission to the Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism unit of assessment.

Our undergraduate programmes are consistently top rated in national league tables most recently 1st in Guardian in 2018, therefore the appointees will have an aptitude to teach to the highest standards at all levels. Teaching contributions will involve contributing to core modules on undergraduate programmes in Criminology, Childhood Studies, or Social Policy, and our Masters programmes as well as developing new optional units (with support as appropriate).

Applications are sought from candidates who have expertise in one or more of the following fields:

  • Ageing
  • Crime, Harm and Social Justice
  • Education and Welfare
  • Physical Activity, Nutrition & Health Behaviour Change
  • Health Policy
  • Public Policy
  • Social Inequalities - Disabilities, Gender, Poverty

Candidates should have experience of delivering and running high quality lectures and seminars in a higher education context; a record of publications judged to be 3* or 4* quality by Research Excellence Framework (REF) and eligible for inclusion in the next REF; ability to gain external research funding as PI or Co-I; commitment to undertaking administrative and pastoral duties within the School; and a completed PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline by the post start date.

The posts are open ended and are available from 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The posts are full time, however the School is open to requests for working part time/job share.

The posts are located on Pathway One and will be appointed at either Profile Level b (Lecturer, grade J) or Profile Level c (Lecturer, grade K) of the University’s Academic Pathways depending on relevant experience of the successful candidates.

The closing date for applications is midnight on 18 April 2018.
