Job Details
The Quantum Information and Foundations group focuses on a wide range of issues in quantum information and the foundations of quantum theory. The group currently consists of two academic staff, Professor Sandu Popescu and Dr Tony Short, one University Research Fellow, two post-docs and two PhD students.
The group is part of a wider university activity in quantum information. The University of Bristol has been at the forefront of research in quantum information from the very beginning of the field and has been considered ever since as one of the world leading research centres in this area. It has a very significant interdisciplinary activity, spanning the Schools of Physics, Mathematics and Department of Electrical Engineering, consisting both of theoreticians and experimentalists. The University is highly supportive of this activity. This includes Quantum Information being one of the five Specialist Research Institutes of the University, and a very recent new initiative, the Quantum Technology and Innovation Centre, a £43m investment in the area.
Applicants should have an outstanding record in quantum information and foundations. They should have a broad range of expertise in foundational aspects of quantum theory, including, for example, nonlocality, entanglement, pre and post-selection, indefinite causal structures, foundations of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. A record of interaction with experimentalists in quantum information is highly desirable.
The appointee is expected to be proactive in establishing new research collaborations both within the group and in the wider Bristol quantum information community. The appointee is expected to contribute to teaching at all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate education in physics, across the core undergraduate physics curriculum and including advanced courses in materials science at MSci or postgraduate level. The University seeks applicants with a strong commitment to all aspects of the academic mission, including outreach and knowledge transfer activities, and academic leadership and coordination.
Informal enquiries can be made to:
Professor Sandu Popescu, s.popescu@bristol.ac.uk or Professor James Annett, head-phys@bristol.ac.uk.
Both the School and the University is committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities, especially from women and other groups currently under-represented in academic posts.
The closing date for applications is 23:59 on 12 April 2018
The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
