Research Associate in heat-health extremes under Paris Agreement climate scenarios

The University of Bristol seeks to employ a 3-year postdoctoral researcher on the project Half a degree Additional warming, Prognosis and Projected Impacts – Health (HAPPI-Health), to be part of the wider HAPPI consortium (www.happimip.org).

The researcher will work as part of a larger team to provide a detailed analysis of how different climate projection methods lead to similarities/disparities in the interpretation of future climate, thereby informing on when a particular method is appropriate to use, and how to interpret past literature results which employ different methodologies. They will use untapped, targeted Paris Agreement scenarios from HAPPI to give a thorough analysis of processed based climate change in relation to mid-latitude extremes, thereby contributing to the missing body of literature in this area. They will assess the drivers of extremes, including targeted experiments that inform on when the regional atmospheric composition plays more of a role than the global mean state, and how this relates to the flow patterns and associated time scales. Finally, they will make headway into understanding impacts of temperature related human health under future climate change, including changes in human habitability zones, and the interplay between hot- and cold-related deaths, in developed and developing nations.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a physical science discipline, with a track record in climate/atmospheric science. Other desired, but not essential qualities, include proficiency in Python or R, and track records in statistics and geophysical fluid dynamics.
