FACULTY OF VETERINARY SCIENCE

MANAGER: ONDERSTEPOORT TEACHING ANIMAL UNIT (OTAU) 

PEROMNES POST LEVEL 6

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing and supervising animal care, health, breeding, feeding, pasture and utilisation;
  • Staff  supervision;
  • Co-ordinating  operational  and practical animal  teaching  activities;
  • Overseeing the maintenance of all OTAU facilities and pastures;
  • Performing cost-effective financial administration, record keeping and general administration;
  • Assisting with the procurement and quality of the animal feedstuffs;
  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in pasture management, animal husbandry, animal welfare and herd/flock health;
  • Perform administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A three-year agricultural tertiary qualification (NQF level 6) and eight years’ experience in farm management, farm animal management  and animal breeding; OR
  • A Master’s in Agriculture (NQF level 7) and five years’ experience in farm management, farm animal management and animal breeding; OR
  • A BVSc or equivalent qualification registered with the SAVC and three years’ experience in production practice plus two years’ experience in farm animal management of farm animal practice;
  • Knowledge of and experience with cattle and/or sheep and/or pigs and/or horses (at least two species).

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Demonstrable planning, organisational and supervisory skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with peers, supervisors and subordinates;
  • Ability to establish co-operative relationships with various stakeholders;
  • Demonstrable administration, computer and information literacy skills;
  • Good language and communication skills;
  • Learning facilitation and/or instruction skills;
  • Computer skills – presentations, word processing and spreadsheets.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Knowledge and experience in animal welfare matters;
  • Tertiary experience and mentoring experience;
  • Experience in research and support.

 

PLEASE NOTE: All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.

 

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 657 207 to R 815 280 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
