Job Details

  • Degree in any life science or a professional qualification (e.g. nurse, profession allied to medicine).
  • Excellent understanding of the research area under study
  • Proven knowledge of project management methodology
  • Previous experience of working in research environment
  • Clear understanding of ethical, research and development, funding and sponsor requirements
  • Understanding of NHS structure and organisation
  • An in-depth understanding of clinical research and study management methodology and proven ability to apply these to the development, testing and implementation of research management procedures
  • The ability to predict, identify and resolve problems that are critical to the running of the projects/studies and plan strategically to avoid them, considering implications beyond that study
  • Ability to demonstrate own initiative
  • High quality administrative skills
  • Excellent IT skills in all software packages
  • Ability to persuade and negotiate at an individual level
  • Ability to work without supervision and prioritise own schedule, and that of others, dividing time between responsibilities appropriately.
  • Commitment to acquire complete project management skills.
  • A flexible, team-working attitude.
  • Ability to work across multiple responsibilities and to show attention to detail and high standards of accuracy in all aspects of work
  • Good telephone manner, letter, report and scientific writing skills, ability to persuade and deliver information effectively through presentations.

  • Substantial experience in a clinical research environment. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme recently funded a 24 month study (16/78/04). The ‘FGM Sister Study’ aims to explore and understand female genital mutilation (FGM) survivors’, male partners’, and healthcare professionals’ preferences for the timing of deinfibulation and their views on how FMG/C-related NHS services can best be delivered. This qualitative research study involves two work packages. The first aims to qualitatively explore the timing preferences for deinfibulation and how NHS FGM services can be improved for type 3 FGM-survivors (WP1a), male partners (WP1b), and healthcare professionals (HCPs) (WP1c). The second aims to use established techniques to validate the qualitative findings, inform best practice and policy recommendations around the timing of deinfibulation and FGM care provision, and identify future actions.

    The post-holder will support this programme of qualitative research, working alongside senior and other staff including post-doctoral researchers, collaborating clinicians, charity and third sector organisations supporting the study.
