Job Purpose

This post will be based primarily in the College of Arts and Law Digital Education team but is also part of a wider team, Birmingham Digital Education, who are part of the Higher Education Futures Institute (HEFi).

The aim of the Higher Education Futures Institute (HEFi) is to ensure that as a contemporary research-intensive institution, the University of Birmingham is at the forefront of delivering research-led teaching that engages its students in the cutting edge research-intensive learning they need to prepare them for their futures.

The University also has significant ambitions to expand its digital portfolio and develop its technology enhanced learning capability through targeted investment and more effective use of its existing resources, enabling the University to realise some of the significant benefits for on campus (blended) learning and off campus teaching.

The post holder will play a leading role in developing digital capability and capacity within Colleges. The role will provide a focus for the support, development and encouragement of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) across College curricular, cultivating productive collaborative relationships with staff and students.

The role will provide high quality services for academics within the college, supporting enhancement and developing skills aligned with College priorities.

The post holder will provide essential advice and support for the development of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) design.As such, they will consult on effective delivery of teaching and learning using the most appropriate technologies and pedagogies, with a focus on eLearning

 

Person Specification

  • Educated to at least first-degree level and have relevant experience.
  • Previous experience of working in a Higher Education Institution within Technology Enhanced Learning and Technical Support roles.
  • Understanding of instructional/learning design in the context of higher education and a broad disciplinary area.
  • Experience of supporting academic staff in the use of learning technologies and alternative modes of delivery.
  • Experience of delivering face-to-face and remote training in the use of learning technologies.
  • Experience of creating and maintaining high quality online learning materials.
  • An appreciation of pedagogic and academic issues and processes as applied to higher education.
  • Knowledge of how Virtual Learning Environments (such as Canvas) and other associated systems can be used to support teaching and learning.
  • An understanding of and confidence with complex IT systems and multimedia content creation.
  • Experience supporting projects through to their successful conclusion.
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills.
  • A firm but diplomatic attitude with the ability to prioritise, negotiate and use one’s own judgement when responding to enquiries from staff and students.
  • Previous experience of a customer driven environment.
  • An ability to work independently, accurately and to deadlines within a team environment.
  • Has, and is able to demonstrate, the ability to interpret, analyse and present information and formulate clear proposals on the basis of the analysis.
