The University of Queensland’s Centre for Coal Seam Gas (CCSG) is a dynamic multi-disciplinary research centre dedicated to developing innovative science, technology and impact assessment to support leading practice in the evolving onshore gas industry. The Centre provides a coordinated access point to address community, government and industry challenges and collaborates with a range of UQ’s schools and institutes as well as with industry and research organisations, nationally and internationally.
The Centre conducts research and supports education in key discipline areas including economics, business, petroleum engineering, geosciences, water, ecology and social sciences. The Centre also provides independent advice to industry and government on policy or business-relevant matters, leadership on scientific and technical issues as well as strategic planning.
The Social Performance stream conducts research on the social dimensions of gas development including cumulative social and economic effects, community acceptance of the industry, stakeholder trust, coexistence relationships with agriculture, and potential health impacts. We are seeking PhD scholars to contribute to understanding cumulative social and economic effects through participatory systems analysis, complex adaptive systems modelling or similar approaches.

PhD opportunities (2) available for students with an Honours/Masters degree in sociology, economics, business systems, environmental management, rural development, or related field to join the Social Performance team at the Centre for Coal Seam Gas, St Lucia campus. The successful candidates will be enrolled in a higher degree (PhD) by research at the University of Queensland and will work on an exciting participatory research project focussed on the use of social and economic indicators and/or the application of complex adaptive systems theory for understanding cumulative social and economic effects of coal seam gas development in local communities.
Prospective applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
An Honours (H1 or H2A) or Masters degree in sociology, economics, business systems, environmental management, rural development, or related field;
One position requires skills in complex systems modelling (such as causal loop diagrams);
Excellent written and verbal communication skills as the research requires engaging with multiple stakeholders;
Must be able to work well in a multi-disciplinary team;
Must be able to enrol full-time in the PhD program
Scholarships and Remuneration
Selected prospective students will receive assistance to apply for a scholarship under the UQ Graduate Scholarships Program – open to domestic (Australian and New Zealand citizens) and international students. The current Living Allowance rate is AUD$27,082 per annum (2018 rate, indexed annually) tax-free for three years with a possible six month extension in approved circumstances.

In addition to the scholarship, there will be a top-up stipend of $5000 for the first year, which may be extended on an annual basis, based on progress and performance.
