The School of Chemical Engineering

Job Number: 504160

The School of Chemical Engineering is an international leader in the chemical engineering field and has an excellent international reputation which has been built over four decades at the University. With 35 academic staff, including 17 professors, the School provides quality programs and leadership in chemical engineering education, research and development, and expert consulting to support the process industries. In addition to core technical areas, research is undertaken on a range of interdisciplinary problems, in collaboration with science, business, econonomics and other disciplines.  Information about the Faculty and the School may be accessed on the Faculty's web site at http://www.uq.edu.au/eait .

The role

The purpose of this project is to investigate whether gender differences impact risk perception and risk management activities within safety critical industries. Effective risk management is crucial in achieving and sustaining safe and optimal operating performance in high hazard industries. Research indicates that there are differences between the risk perceptions of males and females, however, there is very little research that investigates the impact that gender has on industry risk management processes. We will, for the first time, aim to understand the fundamental relationships between gender and industrial risk management, with the view to discovering how organisations can leverage gender differences to better manage operational risk.

Specifically the PhD will focus on exploring gender differences in risk perception, risk analysis, risk control and risk management activities and various organisational levels within industry contexts. The candidate will be able to use a range of methodologies to characterise and analyse gender differences including literature review, interview, survey, and in-field observations. The candidate will be expected to articulate their findings in peer reviewed journal publications and to present their findings to the academic and industry practitioner communities. A key deliverable from the project will be communicating how the research results can be applied to improve the management of risk in industry.

The person

Applicants must have excellent critical thinking skills and experience with managing risk in industry contexts. Very good written and spoken communication are required, and you must be able to analyse and synthesize information from across a range of disciplines. Experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research and producing peer reviewed research publications is desired. An honours undergraduate degree or masters in engineering, science, economics, engineering, social science, psychology or another suitable field is essential.

Applicants must fulfil the PhD admission criteria for the University of Queensland, and demonstrate excellent capacity and potential for research. Entry requirements can be found at http://www.uq.edu.au/study/program.html?acad_prog=7501.

The candidate will join the School of Chemical Engineering research team in RQ2 2018 (July 2018).

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion and offers flexible working arrangements. Applications are particularly encouraged from women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Remuneration

Selected potential students will be assisted to apply for the UQ Scholarship. The current APA scholarship rate is AUD$26,682.00 per annum (2018 rate, indexed annually) tax-free for three years with a possible six month extension in approved circumstances. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to supplement this stipend with paid casual tutoring.
