Associate Professor / Professor (One Post)

The Sociology Department at the University of Pretoria is part of the Faculty of Humanities.
It offers Sociology at undergraduate level (with a specialisation in Industrial Sociology and Labour Studies) as well as, postgraduate programmes at honours, master’s and doctoral levels in (i) Sociology, (ii) Industrial Sociology and Labour Studies, and (iii) Gender Studies. The Department offers a stimulating and rewarding work environment for academics that are innovative in their pedagogy and actively engaged in relevant research.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Supervising postgraduate students;
  • Performing research and producing accredited publication outputs;
  • Performing academic administration and other duties as determined by the Head of Department;
  • Participating in the Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research and community engagement;
  • Participating in Departmental, Faculty and University committees or task teams.

 

Minimum Requirements:

Associate Professor:

  • A doctoral degree in Sociology or Industrial Sociology or a closely related discipline relevant to the teaching of the Department;
  • Appropriate teaching experience, including curriculum design and development, in the applicable field of expertise;
  • Proven supervision to completion of master’s and doctoral students;
  • Accredited research outputs appropriate to the post level;
  • Proven participation in relevant professional activities;
  • Evidence of experience in academic administration;
  • Evidence of attracting research and project funding.

Professor:

  • A doctoral degree in Sociology or Industrial Sociology or a closely related discipline relevant to the teaching of the Department;
  • Appropriate teaching experience, including curriculum design and development, in the applicable field of expertise;
  • Proven supervision to completion of master’s and doctoral students;
  • Accredited research outputs appropriate to the post level, which would include outputs in relevant accredited high-impact peer-reviewed journals;
  • Proven participation in relevant professional activities;
  • Evidence of experience in academic administration;
  • Evidence of attracting research and project funding;
  • Evidence of the establishment of research alliances and international partnering.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes):

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills;
  • Commitment to on-going curriculum transformation;
  • Commitment to engage with new teaching technologies and methodologies;
  • A commitment to the development of South African sociology.

 

Added Advantages and Preferences:

Associate Professor:

  • Specialisation in areas of Gender and/or Industrial, Organisational or Economic Sociology that will advance the development of the Department’s teaching programme;
  • Publications in relevant accredited high-impact peer-reviewed journals;
  • Evidence of the establishment of research alliances and international partnering;
  • NRF-rating.

Professor:

  • Specialisation in areas of Gender and/or Industrial, Organisational or Economic Sociology that will advance the development of the Department’s teaching programme;
  • Experience in the mentoring and coaching of junior and senior staff;
  • NRF-rating.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
