Job Details

The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s largest, most prestigious and diverse research-intensive universities. Ranked in the world’s top 100 universities in the QS rankings, and a member of the Russell Group, it was named as the Times and Sunday Times University of the Year 2017. With an annual turnover of £635 million, more than 33,000 students and 7,800 staff, the University is making significant investments in student education, research and innovation, and extending its international reach.

The campus is also being transformed to meet the needs and aspirations of students and staff. One of four Schools within the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, the School of Chemistry has over 70 years’ experience in both teaching and research excellence in chemical science and is one of the leading Chemistry schools in the UK. The School is home to 45 academic staff, ~60 research staff and ~100 PhD students. Research in the School is delivered via six research groups and cuts across the fields of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. The research themes of these groups involve extensive interactions at the disciplinary interfaces of chemistry, with physics, biological sciences and medicine, environmental science, materials science and engineering.

The School of Chemistry is now seeking to appoint a new Head of School to succeed the current Head, Professor Steve Marsden, following the completion of his term of office. The new Head will lead the continuing development and delivery of the School’s academic strategy, whilst also contributing, as a member of the Faculty’s leadership team, to the development and implementation of the Faculty strategy. The new Head of School will also have the opportunity to shape planned future investment in the infrastructure and estate for the School.

Candidates for the post will be internationally recognised for their research and will have a track record of leadership and management in a relevant context, proven ability to drive and implement change successfully and an aptitude for collaborative working. The successful candidate will bring an ability to think strategically and creatively, and will demonstrate a passion for and commitment to world-class research and education in chemical science. Applications should consist of your CV and full publication list, together with a covering letter that includes a statement of your research, your approach to student education, the way you might lead the development of the School, and how you could contribute to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community.
