DEPARTMENT OF COMPANION ANIMAL CLINICAL STUDIES

PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

The Faculty of Veterinary Science invites applications from persons complying with the relevant requirements for the position of Head of Department.

The Faculty, as the only faculty of its kind in the country, has a unique responsibility in training all veterinarians and veterinary nurses as well as conducting relevant and high impact research. The Department of Companion Animal Clinical Studies is one of five departments and  responsible for teaching, service rendering and research in the disciplines of Anaesthesiology, Clinical Pathology, Dentistry, Diagnostic Imaging, Ophthalmology, Equine Medicine and Surgery, and Small Animal Medicine and Surgery. The Faculty is therefore seeking a dynamic leader for a permanent appointment at Associate Professor or Professor level and a four-year term as Head of the Department.

 

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The strategic and operational management of the Department;
  • Planning and managing the academic, research and clinical programmes of the Department, including the training of veterinary specialist residents;
  • Promoting academic excellence in teaching and research;
  • Recruiting and managing staff of the Department and promoting their continuous development;
  • Managing the Department’s budget and raising funds for departmental activities;
  • Aligning the vision and programme of the Department with the broader vision of the Faculty and the University;
  • Providing and/or facilitating mentorship of young academics in the Department;
  • Offering leadership in transformation initiatives;
  • The clinical services rendered by the clinicians and specialist in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including a 24-hour service in conjunction with the Director of the hospital.

 

Minimum requirements

  • A veterinary degree and registration with the SAVC or eligibility to register;
  • A PhD appropriate to the disciplines within the Department; or Registration with the South African Veterinary Council as a specialist; or eligibility to register with the Council as a specialist; or international board certification in a discipline within the Department;
  • High-profile in the veterinary profession on the national and international level;
  • Recognised academic status in the field through outstanding research, a strong publication record and postgraduate student supervision;
  • Substantial and demonstrable experience in managing academic, research and technical support staff;
  • Appropriate vision for the Department;
  • Experience in grantsmanship;
  • Managerial experience at a tertiary, research or diagnostic institution.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes) 

  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, communication and negotiation skills;
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholder and professional bodies.

 

Added Advantages and Preferences

  • National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Candidates may be expected to make a 15 minute presentation to the Appointments Committee on their vision for the Department.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term.
