FACULTY OF VETERINARY SCIENCE

DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

The Faculty of Veterinary Science invites applications from persons complying with the relevant requirements for the position of Head of Department.

The Faculty, as the only faculty of its kind in the country, has a unique responsibility in training all veterinarians and veterinary nurses as well as conducting relevant and high impact research. The Department of Anatomy and Physiology is one of five Departments and comprises of two sections namely the Anatomy Section, that is mainly responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate anatomy and histology to veterinary science and nursing students, as well as the Physiology Section, that is mainly involved in teaching and research in basic and applied veterinary physiology.

The Faculty is therefore seeking a dynamic leader with a proven record of research for a permanent appointment at Associate Professor or Professor level and a four-year term as Head of Department.

 

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The strategic and operational management of the Department;
  • Planning and managing the academic and research programmes, and laboratories of the Department;
  • Promoting academic excellence in teaching and research;
  • Recruiting and managing staff of the Department and promoting their continuous development;
  • Managing the Department’s budget and raising funds for departmental activities;
  • Aligning the vision and programme of the Department with the broader vision of the Faculty and the University;
  • Providing and/or facilitating mentorship of young academics in the Department;
  • Offering leadership in transformation initiatives;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • A relevant Doctoral degree; 
  • Professional registration where applicable;
  • Recognised academic status and international recognition in the relevant field through a strong research, publication and postgraduate student supervision record;
  • Experience in managing academic, research and technical support staff;
  • Experience in grantsmanship.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes)

  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, communication and negotiation skills;
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholder and professional bodies;
  • Appropriate vision for the Department.

 

Added Advantages and Preferences: 

  • Managerial experience at a tertiary, research or diagnostic institution;
  • National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Candidates may be expected to make a 15 minute presentation to the Appointments Committee on their vision for the Department.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term.
