The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Research Councils UK Collective Fund is ‘one of the most ambitious international research programmes created; with £225 Million being invested across 37 interdisciplinary projects’ to address a range of world problems.  The University of Southampton’s project: ‘Building REsearch Capacity for sustainable water and food security In drylands of sub-saharan Africa (BRECcIA) is proud to be part of this innovative research cohort. BRECcIA comprises 6 Universities located in 4 countries, and partnerships with 8 international organisations

We have an exciting opportunity for experienced researchers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to join our team and to play a pivotal role in this ground-breaking project.

The University of Southampton seeks a hydrologist/hydrological modeller with experience in the areas of Hydrological Modelling, Hydrological Forecasting, Water Resources Management, Water Security and Sustainability for a two-year (renewable for up to one further year subject to the demands of the research project). You will be part of the BRECcIA project team (partners based inMalawi, Kenya, Ghana and the UK) with post-docs from different disciplinary backgrounds.

You will have a PhD* (or equivalent professional qualifications) and experience in Geography, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics, or Computing Science or a related discipline.  You will have excellent data analysis and computational skills in hydrology (hydroclimate data analysis, hydrological modelling, hydrological forecasting, data assimilation, data visualization) to carry out research on quantifying and understanding hydrological variability and its extremes (floods and droughts) across scales from local to regional, and how this intersects with water and food security. This understanding will be used to develop decision support tools and strategies for better managing water resources and mitigating the impacts of extreme events. You will have knowledge and experience of working with large datasets and hydrological models in a Linux/Unix environment, including scientific programming skills in Python, C, Fortran or similar, and using these to address local to regional scale water issues. Previous experience of working on hydrological problems in sub-Saharan Africa, and a knowledge of water and food security challenges would be advantageous. 

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

You will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and students at Southampton, and liaise with African scientists, students and stakeholders to develop and carry out research, write research reports and journal papers., and develop teaching and training materials. There will be opportunities to travel to Africa to participate in project meetings and workshops, and to develop knowledge and professional skills set in:  Trans-, multi- and interdisciplinary research projects; collaborative and partnership working; policy-influence; and international development issues.
