RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent is responsible for:

  • Producing new web content and writing it in an interesting and appealing manner, sourcing images and artwork, and commissioning photographers, liaising with clients or internal departments;
  • Maintaining the UP Web homepage and ensuring the information is accurate and regularly updated;
  • Maintaining the Research Matters and University Social Responsibility mini-sites and ensuring the information is accurate and regularly updated.

The incumbent will require excellent writing and editing skills, with an understanding of the special requirements of writing for the web, such as the use of keywords, hyperlinks, navigation and the importance of brevity.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree;
  • At least three years’ experience in News Management;
  • Substantial experience as a writer, editor or in public relations at a university, news media organisation, government agency or other large, complex knowledge-based organisation;
  • Knowledge of and experience of science communication and writing is desirable, which includes proven knowledge and experience of content writing/editing for websites;
  • Experience in Content Management Systems;
  • Experience with photo editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format, and build and maintain relationships;
  • Must have a good eye for detail, with excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation skills;
  • Team player with the confidence to take the lead and guide other departments when necessary;
  • Good technical understanding and fast leaner;
  • Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with contributors, designers and webmasters;
  • Good organisational skills to collate material from multiple sources and produce web content within tight deadlines.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Previous experience in a higher education environment;
  • Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms;
  • News reporting/newsroom management experience.
  • Experience in Public Relations, Marketing, Sales and Stakeholder Management.

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 543 334 to R 669 738 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
