Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?

Do you have a background in cloud physics or dynamics with expertise in satellite remote sensing of convective clouds or a related field?

Do you want to further your career in the National Centre for Atmospheric Science and one of the UK’s leading research and intensive Universities?

As part of the major new Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) African Science for Weather Information and Forecasting Techniques (African-SWIFT) project, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Scientist to lead research into determining cloud physical properties of deep convective clouds in West and East Africa using satellite instruments with a view to improving nowcasting capability. This post is a key leadership role within the programme to expand the research of NCAS and ICAS to include remote sensing of moist convection. The GCRF African-SWIFT project is a £7.8 million programme of research and capability building funded by Research Councils UK that seeks to develop the science for sustainable African weather forecasting capability in order to enhance the livelihood of African populations and improve the economies of their countries. The post will be based in the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) at the University of Leeds and will be supervised by Dr John Marsham and Professor Alan Blyth. The successful candidate will be responsible for forming a group on satellite remote sensing of clouds that works closely with other satellite groups in the UK (e.g. NCEO and the Met Office). The role will involve working closely with scientists in the SWIFT Nowcasting and Evaluation Work Packages.Part of the role will involve training African scientists on how to use EUMETSAT and other products and providing mentoring to earlier career researchers in Africa. You will hold a PhD (or be close to obtaining) in a physical science. You will have a strong background in research in satellite remote sensing of clouds and have excellent qualitative and quantitative research skills, communication skills, and an ability to effectively manage your own time. You will also have experience of planning and delivery of research projects. A commitment to delivering project outputs that build capacity in partner countries is essential, as is willingness to travel to the region.
