RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will assist the Deputy Director Technical Services in focusing on the mechanical service related to plant and equipment. To enable the Engineering Manager to achieve these objectives, he/she will need to attend to the following: 

  • Ensure statutory compliance of plant and equipment;
  • Ensure that effective maintenance planning and execution is done according to accepted engineering standards and meeting the business requirements;
  • Effectively manage the internal workshops;
  • Ensure that external maintenance contracts are developed, implemented and managed according to the business requirements and to provide the best value for money option to the University of Pretoria;
  • Manage the relevant maintenance budget to ensure that the required work is done with the available funds and to record deferred maintenance;
  • Perform project reviews, commissioning witnessing and hand-overs (as client representative) pertaining to the relevant building services;
  • Strategically plan projects related to the repair or replacement of building services, plant and equipment necessary for the University to achieve its mission and objectives;
  • Implement problem-solving skills on a continuous basis to manage and resolve crisis situations;
  • Provide strategic support and assistance to the Deputy Director: Technical Services.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A four-year Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering;
  • 10 years’ proven work experience in a maintenance environment;
  • Professional registration with ECSA;
  • Proof of registration to obtain a Government Certificate of Competence;
  • A valid driver’s licence;
  • Sound knowledge of the following mechanical services:
    • HVAC installations;
    • Hot water systems;
    • Elevators;
    • Lifting equipment;
    • Compressors;
    • Fire protection systems;
    • Gas systems.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Analytical thinking;
  • Administrative skills to ensure that all records are kept in orderly fashion;
  • Accounting and budget control skills;
  • Computer literacy in MS Office and Excel;
  • The ability to identify and solve high priority problems in a crisis situation;
  • Conflict handling ability and the ability to apply problem solving techniques in both technical and organisational contexts.

 

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 735 063 to R 936 871 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
