FACULTY OF BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE
ARCHITECTURE / LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be required to:
- Teach at undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels in the programmes of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, with a specific focus on Construction Technology and Design;
- Actively undertake contract research or original research projects that lead to research outcomes/publications;
- Participate in the Department’s community service programmes;
- Act as study leader/supervisor for postgraduate students;
- Assist with administrative duties as determined by the Head of Department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
- Master’s degree in Architecture or Landscape Architecture;
- Registered or registerable with SACAP/SACLAP or other comparable international professional council;
- A minimum of five years’ proven practice experience in the built environment;
- Experience in lecturing at tertiary level.
Senior Lecturer:
- PhD in Architecture or Landscape Architecture;
- A publications record;
- Registered or registerable with SACAP/SACLAP or other comparable international professional council;
- A minimum of five years’ proven practice experience in the built environment;
- Experience in lecturing at tertiary level.
Associate Professor:
- PhD in Architecture or Landscape Architecture;
- A publication record in indexed academic journals;
- Registered or registerable with SACAP/SACLAP or other comparable international professional council;
- A minimum of five years’ proven practice experience in the built environment;
- Experience in lecturing at tertiary level and supervising postgraduate research.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Good language and communication skills;
- Good computer skills (CAD related);
- Undertaking to further own academic qualifications and research output. Preference will be given to candidates who have already embarked on or completed PhD studies.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- Evidence of academic writing skills such as publications in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings;
- Ability to initiate relevant research, or undertake contract research, in the departmental research fields and related aspects of Interior Architecture;
- Willingness and ability to engage directly with research on taking up office;
- Experience in or an interest in well-building and resource-efficient design;
The Department of Architecture is grounded in an ecosystemic design approach and would welcome candidates with a similar philosophy.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
