Job Purpose

The College delivers an outstanding and nationally leading Physician Associate (PA) programme that recruits around 80 students per annum onto a two-year postgraduate qualification. The programme lead, Professor Jim Parle has recently retired and the programme now requires a senior clinical or clinical-related, academic with PhD or MD who is accustomed to working at senior level (ie, CEOs, MDs, Deans, HEE) and is highly knowledgeable about the PA role with extensive and long-standing experience – preferably experience at running a PA course in the UK.

The PA role is strategically vital for Health Service provision and we would require an individual with specific experience of this branch of health professional in the UK. The individual should have extensive experience of the role in the UK and it would be helpful if they also had experience of the role in other countries globally to understand the trajectory and capacity requirements for these graduates. The programme is innovative and requires continued innovation and strong leadership to secure its future in an increasingly competitive recruitment market. An individual with a background in delivering research with a respectful standing in the NHS and/or university sector would be advantageous – not least in ensuring a research-informed provision for the programme.

The appointment of a senior academic will encompass the main strands of teaching, administration and research.

Person Specification

Senior clinical academic with PhD or MD; accustomed to working at senior level (ie, CEOs, MDs, Deans, HEE); highly knowledgeable about PA role with extensive and long-standing experience; preferably experience in running a PA course in the UK.
