Job Details

  • PhD level degree in the fields of biochemistry or molecular biology, with a preference for demonstrable knowledge of animal metabolism
  • Strong ability to design and perform high quality experiments and to analyse and interpret data correctly
  • Ability to think creatively about research and skills in problem solving
  • Publication in high quality peer-reviewed journals related to the above fields
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (including written and presentational)
  • Effective organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to work flexibly, when necessary, to fulfil the needs of the research project
  • Evidence of an ability to work individually and in a research team
  • Experience and willingness to work in a competitive academic research environment
  • Good knowledge of health and safety regulations
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant techniques or methods and ability develop new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • To investigate how metabolic flexibility changes in hypoxia, and how this might reveal new therapeutic targets to selectively kill hypoxic cancer cells.
  • We have previously identified a number of metabolic enzymes that may become essential for hypoxic cell viability. This post is to comprehensively investigate one of these enzymes, contributing both to our knowledge of mammalian metabolic networks, and cancer cell biology. To facilitate this, the post-holder will show appropriate independence and ability to work as part of a team to drive their research project and interact with collaborators where necessary to produce highly innovative, world-leading research. The overall aim is to produce the data required to de-risk the design and development of novel agents targeting these metabolic enzymes to better treat hypoxic tumours.

This post will sit within the Tennant research group, part of the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Biology at the University of Birmingham. We use NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to aid the study of metabolic pathway use in health and disease using information from the incorporation of molecules labelled with stable isotopes (e.g. 13C, 15N) in order to investigate metabolic pathway usage in both cells and tissues.

This postdoctoral position is available for 3 years from the 1st September on a full-time basis.

The post holder will set specific objectives in consultation with Dr Tennant.
