Job Details

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow on a two-year ESRC-funded project, ‘Reclaiming social care: Adults with learning disabilities seizing opportunities in the shift from day services to community lives’ The project will investigate how people with learning disabilities in the UK are remaking care and support, in the context of reduced day service provision. There is anecdotal evidence of the emergence of innovative peer-led ‘self-build’ networks and sites, providing new opportunities for social inclusion for people with learning disabilities, and their families and supporters. However, little is known about their extent and activities. The project will, for first time, examine these networks in detail including the informal learning involved.

The Research Fellow will work as part of a team of academic researchers and research fellows, based at the universities of Southampton and Dundee. The role will involve undertaking a literature review, ethnographic research (including interviews and observation) in two case-study sites in Southern England – Hampshire and Dorset, data analysis, report writing and dissemination. There will be the opportunity to co-author academic journal articles and present at academic conferences.

The position will be part-time (0.2) fixed term from 18 June 2018 for 15 months. Candidates for this post should have a background in education, disability or social care research and may be undertaking or about to start a PhD* in a relevant subject. The appointee will be based in the Southampton Education School.

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

You should also have some experience of working with non-academic partners, be an excellent communicator, have very good organisational skills, can work independently and as part of a UK-wide team, and have a willingness to travel within England (plus a few visits to our partner site in Scotland).

The Research Fellow will be based in Southampton and supervised by Prof Melanie Nind (Education). Although supervised by Prof Nind, they will work within a research team with the holder of the research award, Dr Andrew Power (in Geography).

For informal enquiries, please contact Prof Melanie Nind m.a.nind@soton.ac.uk 023 8059 5813.
