Job Details

You must have completed a PhD in a relevant field and you will support and contribute to the university’s REF (Research Excellence Framework) targets, together with showing potential for attracting research funding. You will be expected to provide high-quality research-led teaching in Applied Linguistics/ English language education appropriate to a diverse student body, at UG and PG levels. You will support the delivery and ongoing development of our ELT/TESOL MA programme, leading postgraduate modules in Language Education, as well as contributing to undergraduate linguistics modules according to your specific areas of expertise: demonstrable research and teaching experience in language pedagogy, online education, language teacher education, curriculum design, language for specific purposes, or other area related to English Language teaching, to complement and strengthen the existing teaching and research expertise of staff in Modern Languages and Linguistics in the Faculty of Humanities will be an advantage. Your teaching profile will complement and extend the current provision in Applied linguistics. 

Experience in supervising MA and PhD students is desirable, as this will be an important aspect of the role. 

In the REF 2014, Modern Languages and Linguistics at Southampton was ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of its research. Over the last five years, Modern Languages and Linguistics has built and maintained a deserved reputation as a leading centre for linguistics. Our research spans various areas in particular language acquisition, linguistic theory, sociolinguistics, and applied linguistics/language pedagogy, with particular expertise in English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese contexts (see our website at http://www.southampton.ac.uk/ml/).
