JOB PURPOSE:

The Head: Community Based Research and Postgraduate Studies is a senior academic and member of the University of Pretoria’s Mamelodi Campus Management Team and reports to the Dean: UP Mamelodi Campus with respect to the disciplinary, inter- multi and trans-disciplinary community based research focus of the Campus. S/he will assist the Dean in developing the research and internationalisation agenda of the Campus - the Mamelodi Collaborative and align it to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). The Head: Community Based Research co-ordinates the collaboration with other faculties within the University as well as partnerships with various stakeholders including civil society, local government, funding agencies as well as other universities locally and internationally. S/he should be an experienced researcher and research manager, be diligent, take initiative, be articulate and have high energy levels, a positive attitude and proactively assist the Dean with the development and execution of the research and postgraduate programme. S/he works closely with the Department of Research and Institutional Support as well as the Department of University Relations with respect to fundraising for research. S/he will also assist the Dean in planning and preparing the annual research plan aligned with the Faculty Plan and monitoring associated indicators and expenditure.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • The development and management of community based research:
    • Directing, co-ordinating and further developing the research and postgraduate programmes of the UP Mamelodi Campus as informed by the UP Strategic Plan 2017-2021, the new strategic vision and growth of the Campus and priorities outlined in the Faculty / Campus Plan for 2017 -2021 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s);
  • Postgraduate student support:
    • Directing, co-ordinating and further developing the disciplinary, inter-, multi- and trans- disciplinary postgraduate programmes on the Campus informed by the priorities in the Campus Plan 2017-2021;
  • The research programme focussed on the Mamelodi Educational Pathways Initiative (MEPI):
    • Developing and managing a research programme focussed on MEPI using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies;
  • People management:            
    • Performing line management of staff within the matrix structure of the Mamelodi Collaborative as well as other staff as may be designated by the Dean;
  • Liaison and stakeholder relationship management:
    • Fostering and preserving relationships between the Deputy Deans, research leaders, national and international stakeholders of the faculties involved in the research programme of the Campus. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • PhD in the field of Education;
  • 10 years’ teaching experience in a tertiary institution;
  • At least five years of research management experience;
  • A track record of supervision of Masters and PhD students;
  • A publication record in the field of expertise and in accredited journals;
  • Evidence of writing reports for external funding;
  • Experience in the co-ordination of several research projects;
  • Experience in community based research;
  • Experience in international collaboration.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the higher education research and research management landscape;
  • Thorough understanding of the need to develop emerging researchers and the next generation of academic staff;
  • Thorough understanding of community based research;
  • Good skills for academic planning, financial planning, staff performance management and co-ordination of all other operational aspects of a research programme;
  • Understanding of data and the use of data in decision making;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research data analysis

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 735 063 to R 936 871 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
