Job Purpose

• To work within the PLEXUS research project as part of the Research Challenge 1 (RC1) team. RC1 brings together post-doctoral research associates from the Universities of Bristol, Southampton and Cambridge for the purpose of establishing critical configurations for cases in which transport and buried utility infrastructures coincide with an integral bridge, founded on the knowledge deriving from current research on each of these features in isolation.
• To operate within the given area specialism: geotechnical and structural engineering, buried utility infrastructures and integral bridges, with a particular emphasis on buried utility infrastructure.
• To conduct laboratory experiments and analyse and interpret research findings and results.
• To contribute to the writing of bids and generate additional funding that arise from, or are complementary to, this work.
• To contribute to disseminating the results arising from the project via publications in conferences and journals, and presenting these results, including contributing to public understanding of the research and its arising outcomes.

Person Specification

• First degree in civil or structural engineering and a higher degree (ideally a PhD) relevant to the research area (or close to completing a higher degree) or equivalent experience or qualifications.
• Experience in physical modelling, and associated instrumentation, and familiarity with working in a civil engineering laboratory environment.
• High level analytical capability relevant to geotechnical and structural engineering, with some numerical modelling experience being an advantage.
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
• Fluency in relevant physical modelling techniques in relation to geotechnical and/or structural engineering, and associated methods with the ability to contribute to developing new ones.
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
• Understanding of, and ability to contribute to, broader management and administration processes.
• Ability to contribute to the detailed planning and organising of Research Challenge 1 and, more generally, the wider PLEXUS research project.
• Ability to co-ordinate your own work with others’ in order to avoid conflict or duplication of effort.
