UAV Designer x5 - Technical and Experimental

Job Details

The Ultra project aims to develop a large fixed-wing aircraft capable of operating in harsh environments and carrying heavy payloads (up to 100 kg) for several hours. The platform will be used for humanitarian, scientific and commercial missions. After successfully completing the initial sizing and wind tunnel tests, the project is now ready to enter the preliminary and detail design phase. The maiden flight of the first prototype is scheduled for the first months of 2019.The selected candidates will support the design and development work in one or more of the following areas: airframe design, structural analysis, avionics and electrical systems, control and communication, aerodynamics and dynamic loads.

The successful candidates will have experience with one or more of the following engineering design and analysis software: SolidWorks, ANSYS, Fluent, EAGLE, or equivalent.

The positions will be funded until  with the possibility of extension depending on the project outcome.

Southampton UAV is a research team consisting of academics, staff and post-graduate researchers/ students based at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment's Computational Engineering and Design Group. We are part of the Autonomous Systems research group, a University Strategic Research Group aiming to achieve a global top five reputation and provide continuity of funding for world-class science and research in the area of autonomous systems.

We design, manufacture and fly unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from a research perspective. Many of our systems make use of cutting-edge design methods, state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques and novel applications of technology. For example, in 2011, we designed the World's first 3D printed UAV (Sulsa) which has since undergone flight trials in Antarctica with the Royal Navy, and in 2016, we performed a flight display of our 35 kg Light UAV (Spotter) at Farnborough International Airshow.
