DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN VETERINARY PHYSIOLOGY (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Department of Anatomy and Physiology comprises two sections namely the Anatomy Section, which is mainly responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Anatomy and Histology to Veterinary Science and Nursing students, and the Physiology Section, which is mainly involved in teaching and research in basic and applied Veterinary Physiology. The Department is looking for a candidate who will primarily focus on research in Veterinary Physiology. The successful candidate will actively participate in:

  • Departmental research programmes;
  • Research and publications in national and international journals;
  • Recruiting candidates for postgraduate training;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision of master’s and/or doctoral students;
  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Veterinary Physiology;
  • Curriculum development/improvement;
  • Departmental and faculty administrative activities as delegated by the Head of Department;
  • Academic self-development as appropriate to the individual’s academic career;
  • Departmental service rendering activities, including service rendering to developing communities and continuing education programmes.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Lecturer:

  • An appropriate PhD in Physiology, or an equivalent degree with a veterinary focus;
  • Demonstrable experience in research and evidence of a developing research track;
  • A proven record of publishing in accredited journals;
  • Some teaching experience at undergraduate levels;
  • Experience in post graduate training will be an added advantage.

 

Associate Professor:

  • An appropriate PhD in Physiology, or an equivalent degree with a veterinary focus; 
  • Demonstrable experience in research, supported by a proven record of publications in national and international accredited journals and research focus area;
  • Postgraduate training and successful completion of supervision of masters students;
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate levels;
  • National standing as an academic/researcher;
  • Experience in grantsmanship;
  • National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist, or eligibility to apply for a rating.

 

Professor:

  • An appropriate PhD in Physiology or an equivalent degree; 
  • Demonstrable experience in research, supported by a proven record of publications in national and international accredited journals;
  • Postgraduate training and successful completion of supervision of masters and doctoral students;
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate levels;
  • National and international standing as an academic/researcher;
  • Experience in grantsmanship;
  • National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Proven knowledge and competency in Physiology;
  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills;
  • Critical thinking ability.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Experience in blended learning practices;
  • Focus.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
