DEPARTMENT OF MERCANTILE LAW

LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (THREE POSTS)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbents will be responsible for:

  • Specialising in Tax Law and/or Social Security Law and/or Aspects of Financial Law (e.g. Insurance Law, FAIS, FICA, Financial Regulation et cetera) and/or Transnational Business Law (International Trade Law). It is also expected of the incumbent to teach in a variety of modules offered by the Department of Mercantile Law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in order to meet the needs of the Department;
  • Conducting academic and scholarly research;
  • Having an in-depth understanding of specialisation to enable development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field;
  • Supervising masters and doctoral students;
  • Mentoring students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Performing academic administration and management;
  • Performing other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:

  • At least a LLM in one of the above-mentioned or closely related fields in Mercantile Law;
  • In the absence of a LLD degree, registration for a doctoral degree in one of the above-mentioned fields in Mercantile Law with proof of substantive progress;
  • Added advantages and preferences:
    • Relevant teaching experience including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
    • At least two substantial publications in peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books in the past three years.

 

Senior Lecturer:

  • A LLD degree in one of the above-mentioned or closely related fields in Mercantile Law;
  • At least five years’ teaching experience including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
  • At least eight substantial publications in peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books in of which three should have been published in the past three years;
  • Postgraduate supervision/teaching experience;
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision.

 

Associate Professor:

  • A LLD degree in one of the above-mentioned or closely related fields in Mercantile Law;
  • At least eight  years’ teaching experience including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
  • At least sixteen substantial publications in peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books of which six should have been published in the past three years.
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision; and
  • A suitable NRF rating and/or identified by peers as an independent established researcher at, at least a national level.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

Lecturer:

  • Applicable practical professional experience;
  • Participation in academic conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • Ability to plan and initiate discipline related research
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team;
  • Appropriate communication skills.

 

Senior Lecturer (same as for Lecturer, plus):

  • National and some international recognition in own field of expertise by peers in the discipline.

 

Associate Professor (same as for Senior Lecturer, plus):

  • Participation in national and international academic conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • Proven ability to independently plan and initiate discipline-related research;
  • An established network of collaborative researchers.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
