Job Purpose

Working closely with the Deputy Director of Operations (Education) and College Director and Deputy Director of Education, the post holder will perform a critical role in supporting and underpinning the educational activity of the College helping to develop the strategic direction of Student Experience and Welfare. It is important to the College that its students have a positive experience at each step of their University career and this post holder is therefore responsible for providing authoritative advice and guidance around improving the student experience and ensuring that students are appropriately supported throughout their journey to graduation and beyond. They will also be required to provide the first point of contact for a broad range of issues associated with student transition, progression and retention.

In fulfilling these functions the post holder will have an understanding of university policy and strategy in these areas, and this will include contributing to short to medium-term College wide projects that highlight challenges with existing processes and systems, recommending solutions, and ensuring that agreed developments are implemented. In addition, the post holder will be expected to provide a distinctive and visible point of contact for students so that their support can be maximised and a sense of belonging can be created, and good practice shared across the College. This is a busy and varied role, and the post holder should be a motivated self-starter, capable of working independently and committed to working collaboratively with a range of colleagues across the College. The ability to communicate persuasively with both academic and professional services staff is key as is the need for first class interpersonal skills in order to engage successfully with the student community.

 

Person Specification

  • A first degree or equivalent qualification
  • Good understanding of the external environmental factors affecting the HE sector in general and a research intensive civic University in particular
  • Proven ability to work with senior managers, within both College and central University management and a high degree of personal accountability with the ability to influence and win support from senior staff
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with students.
  • Willingness to learn and understand the direction/vision of the School and College and how this may impact the student experience.
  • Ability to motivate, generate enthusiasm and engender confidence with a variety of staff across the University.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent IT skills, including relevant experience of Microsoft office packages. Aptitude for learning new packages to support analysis and presentation of information.
  • Experience of liaising or coordinating activities across teams and a complex, multi-disciplinary academic unit.
  • Experience in analysing data and using management information systems.
  • Demonstrable ability to pro-actively manage own workload, plan effectively, balance competing priorities and work to deadlines.
  • Experience of working independently, accurately, with attention to detail and to deadlines within a team environment and to work as part of a collective team.
  • Experience of staff supervision and/or line management responsibility.
  • Initiative, imagination, tenacity and self-confidence.
  • An appreciation and general understanding of the Data Protection Act and Codes of Ethics for confidentiality.
  • Experience of delivery training or presentations to targeted audiences. This may be on a large scale basis or smaller group based training or presentation.
  • Experience of delivering project and initiatives, with measurable outcomes and deliverables
  • Proven ability to think ahead to anticipate opportunities and challenges, and to use this knowledge to develop initiatives and approaches creatively and proactively
  • Commitment to continuing professional development and training
  • Proven ability to give and seek both structured and informal feedback in a clear, open and constructive manner
