Die Desmond Tutu TB-sentrum (DTTS) is in die Departement Pediatrie en Kindergesondheid aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch gesetel. Die DTTS verrig al meer as ’n dekade baanbrekernavorsing as ’n wêreldleier op die gebied van pediatriese tuberkulose en verwante uitdagings vir openbare gesondheid, onder meer MIV. Die DTTS het in die loop van ’n hele aantal gesamentlike ondernemings sterk bande met die voorste universiteite plaaslik en in die buiteland, beleidmakers en ander belanghebbendes gesmee. Die DTTS-span vir sosiale wetenskappe het tans meer as 30 personeellede, waaronder 18 navorsers op nagraadse of PhD-vlak uit vakrigtings soos sielkunde, sosiologie, sosiale antropologie, openbare gesondheid en ontwikkelingstudies. Hierdie span wil graag gretige, jong, aspirant navorsers in die sosiale wetenskappe werf wat vlot is in Xhosa. Die aangesteldes se primêre verantwoordelikhede sal die transkripsie en vertaling van ’n omvangryke kwalitatiewe datastel wees, sowel as die ontleding van die datastel en die skryf van artikels. GELEENTHEDE:Moontlikhede om hierdie werkverpligtings met verdere studie op nagraadse te kombineer.

The Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) is part of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Stellenbosch University. For over a decade, the DTTC has been conducting cutting edge, world-leading science on Paediatric Tuberculosis and associated public health challenges (including HIV). The DTTC has fostered a number of close collaborations with leading national and international universities, policy makers and other stakeholders. The social science team at the DTTC employs more than 30 staff members, including 18 postgraduate/PhD-level researchers from disciplines such as psychology, sociology, social anthropology, public health, and development studies. This social science team is looking to recruit eager, young, aspiring social scientists who are fluent in Xhosa. The appointees’ primary responsibilities will be the transcription and translation of a large qualitative dataset, contributing to its analysis, and article writing. OPPORTUNITIES:Possibilities to combine with further studies at postgraduate level.

Duties

  • Field implementation of the research protocol.Transcribe and translate qualitative data.Undertake and write a literature review.Draft a research manuscript.Ensure that the social science component of trials are implemented in South Africa according to the agreed protocols, procedures and timeframes.Ensure that ethical requirements are fulfilled.Perform any other duties required by line management.

 

Job Requirements

  • An honours degree (or equivalent) in a social science (e.g. psychology or sociology).The ability to speak, read and write English and Xhosa fluently.The ability to transcribe verbatim with speed and accuracy.The ability to translate idiomatically from Xhosa to English without sacrificing nuance.Excellent written communication skillsSound interpersonal skills and the ability to work within an interdisciplinary team.A goal-oriented disposition and the skills to solve problems independently and effectively.Computer literacy (MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel).

 

Recommendation

  • An interest in pursuing a qualification in social science at Master’s level.A long-term aspiration to grow into a career as a self-funded TB/HIV social science researcher.A firm, demonstrable grounding in a range of research methodologies.A valid driver’s license.
