Job Details
Applications are being invited from competent inpiduals who can provide professional assistance to the AKU-IBC in monitoring and coordinating the campus-wide biosafety program. This would include risk-based laboratory inspections, accident investigations, and record keeping. Assess University facilities to determine suitability for use in potentially hazardous biomedical research operations, and develop teaching and training sessions for technical staff, students and faculty regarding biosafety practices, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities Reporting to the Chair of Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Associate Vice Provost Research (Health Sciences), you will be responsible for the following:
- Performing on-site regulatory/policy compliance reviews of facilities to be used for biohazardous agent manipulations
- Conducting risk based inspections of BSL-2and 3 LABS, assessesing and reporting on suitability for use
- Developing and maintaining records of laboratory accidents/ spills / injuries
- Interacting with lab personnel, investigators, and others as needed to ensure follow up and correction of problems
- Developing and maintaining databases of information related to biohazardous material holdings (MSDS, microorganism, Toxins etc.) and reporting on Coordinates IBC meetings, conducting initial review of research projects and maintaining records of IBC minutes and approvals for research projects
- Actively participating in the institutional accreditation processes (JCIA/ ISO etc.)
- Coordinating the development and preparation of content for the Institutional Biosafety Committee web page
- Developing and preparing content of biosafety training modules
- Providing guidance and assistance to investigators with respect to institutional and regulatory filings related to biosafety
- Initiating and conducting literature and internet research to obtain scientific information /national / international guidelines related to specific microorganisms, recombinant DNA molecules and biotoxins and updates IBC members for requirement for change in the policy
- Performing miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
An ideal candidate must have:
- Master's degree in Microbiology or Biomedical Sciences
- At least 5 years of experience of working in a laboratory
- Additional certification level courses directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
- Working knowledge of biomedical laboratory methods, procedures, techniques, facilities, and equipment
- Current knowledge and understanding of biosafety guidelines, national / international regulations and standards for the disposition and use of biohazardous agents in biomedical laboratory and animal research facilities. Knowledge of recombinant DNA, microbial animal and human pathogens, and biotoxins
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with a wide range of inpiduals and constituencies in a perse community
- Investigative and problem solving skills and ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel
- Ability to develop teaching/training and resource material for IBC web-page
- Ability to independently conduct teaching and training sessions for technical staff, students and faculty regarding biosafety practices, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications
- Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
- Ability to take meeting minutes and edit written materials
- Ability to work independently and to organize and prioritize work assignments
- Database and records management skills
