The Division of Anatomical Pathology at Tygerberg Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University has been awarded an international grant for the development of a biorepository. The Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Biospecimen Respository was launched on 18 November 2014 and is aimed at collecting, processing, storing and distributing HIV-related cancer specimens. A full-time position for a professional board registered nurse and/or phlebotomist is available and a two-year contract is offered that may be renewable pending performance and availability of funding. Incumbents will join an integrated team of pathologists, scientists, clinicians and nurses. Preference will be given to candidates with HIV-related work experience, as well as research experience.

 

Duties

  • Assisting with day-to-day activities involving collection and transportation of biospecimens;
  • Assisting with acquisition of informed patient consent;
  • Liaising with pathologists, scientists, clinicians and nurses;
  • Involvement in community advisory board;
  • Assisting and coordinating biospecimen packaging, transportation and distribution in compliance with IATA regulations);
  • Providing administrative support to biobank team;
  • Capturing data sets accompanying biospecimens;
  • Assisting with the implementation of quality management systems;
  • Assisting with various research studies;
  • Willingness to travel to clinics and hospitals in the Western Cape, including in Khayelitsha and Worcester
  • Willingness to undergo specific training and to comply with required standards as applicable to the biobank.

 

Job Requirements

  • A qualification as a professional nurse/ phlebotomist and valid registration with the South African Nursing Council;
  • Must be proficient in at least two languages, of which one must be  isiXhosa and the other English or Afrikaans;
  • Computer literate. 

 

Recommendation

  • Experience in the research environment especially in HIV/AIDS and/or cancer;
  • Experience in collection and transportation of biospecimen;
  • Administrative experience;
  • Motivated with strong organisational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail and record keeping and committed to high quality support;
  • The ability to work independently and to take initiative, but also to work as part of small team.
