You will be expected to develop an international reputation for excellence in research. Your research interests will strengthen or broaden the WAIS research portfolio. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to new strategic thrusts in Web Science, Data Science, Crowd Computing and Artificial Intelligence from a socio-technical perspective.

You will also take a leading role in the delivery of core courses at undergraduate and masters level; currently, these include computer science, software engineering, web science, web technologies, and data science.

You will already have a track record of producing peer-reviewed, outstanding publications and will hold a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a Computer Science discipline. Through mentoring and networking with colleagues, we are offering an opportunity for you to develop independence in research, experience in PhD supervision, success in grant applications and excellence in teaching and education, including a postgraduate certificate in academic practice (PCAP).  On successful achievement of the core competencies (see New Frontier Fellows expectation), you will be eligible for appointment to an open-ended academic post at Lecturer/Associate Professor level.

WAIS Research Group

The Web and Internet Science (WAIS) group researches socio-technical systems at scale using a combination of data science, computer science and social science methods to understand and engineer the interaction between computational and human constituents of very large-scale information systems - the Web and the Internet. Research in these areas is required to enable the Web to address new challenges: social data, intelligent services, accountability, privacy, security.

ECS

The post will be held in the Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. Ranked in the top one per cent of universities globally and among the UK’s top 20 for research, the University of Southampton has an international reputation for its research, teaching and enterprise activities. 

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, ECS was first in the UK for the volume and quality of research in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The volume and quality of ECS Computer Science research is in the top 10 in the UK, with 100% of Computer Science research impact rated as world leading or internationally excellent.
