The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH), within the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, develops and applies epidemiological, statistical and mathematical methods to advance innovation, validation, and application in the field of public health. Within EPH we are currently looking for candidates for the following position:Biostatistician

 

Research environment

The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, Switzerland, is seeking an experienced biostatistician with an interest in working on epidemiologic data. Faculty members, researchers, and PhD students at Swiss TPH rely on scientific exchange regarding high quality data analysis and research computing to pursue their impact-driven and population-oriented research. Swiss TPH hosts a biorespository and has access to large population-based health, environmental and biomarkers datasets. It collaborates actively in national and international epidemiology, public health and personalized health networks. The research activities cover relevant dimensions of infections and non-communicable diseases in humans and animals and include observational studies, intervention trials, and implementation research. To strengthen public health and epidemiology expertise on a national and international scale, Swiss TPH offers graduate and post-graduate courses and programs in epidemiology, public health, and quantitative data analysis for students with natural science, life science, medical and social science as well as economic backgrounds.

 

Responsibilities

The ideal candidate is an independent, innovative and solution-oriented thinker with a strong background in processing large data sets often containing protected health information.

The successful candidate will be responsible of managing a small team of statisticians and programmers and act as leader in the development and application of statistical and computational methodologies related to data analysis in the domains of epidemiology, public health, and genomics. Key aspects of the job are to collaborate with a team of local, national and international scientists on study design, data analysis strategies, and related software and research IT aspects. Hands-on data analysis is expected in all domains and particularly also in relation to high-throughput omics data. You will create innovative data visualizations. You will actively participate in scientific manuscript writing. You will be expected to provide teaching, training, and mentoring in quantitative methods to graduate and post-graduate students with medical, life-science or social science backgrounds.

 

Expected profile

Our ideal candidate has the following profile:

  • PhD in Biostatistics or equivalent background
  • Team spirit and interest in statistical consulting with a cross-disciplinary aptitude
  • Interest in research at the interface of theory and application
  • Good communication skills in English. German is desirable, but not a pre-requisite.
  • Ability to follow several projects
  • Experience in epidemiological research
  • Excellent data management and programming skills
  • Experience in teaching statistics to students from different backgrounds, including students without a mathematical background
  • Experience in coaching PhD students

 

Additional qualifications welcomed:

  • Experience in handling and analyzing–omics datasets, including integrative pathway/network analysis as well as machine learning models
  • Experience with version control systems, in particular Git and GitHub
  • Interest in mobile health technology, including smartphone applications and wearable devices to develop temporally-dense measures of location and behavior

The position is available immediately and is based in Basel, Switzerland. Depending on your experience and background, the contract may initially be limited to a period of three years but with the possibility of extension.
