PhD Studentship: Modelling flood inundation at large scale and high-resolution

Job Details

Flood inundation modelling is a key component of flood risk analysis. Over the last decades these models enabled us to predict and understand flooding at high levels of detail and accuracy. In a world of complex and rapid socio-economic and climate change, the demand for models that are capable of simulating the interacting phenomena operating at large scales is rapidly increasing. Despite significant recent advances in the availability of remotely sensed data and computational power, flood inundation models currently available are not efficient enough to use this wealth of data to simulate problems at large scale. Accurate modelling of flood inundation requires physics-based dynamic (i.e. unsteady flow) numerical models operating in (at least) two dimensions. In addition, capturing the flow mechanisms that are driven by small-scale features of terrain requires very finely resolved topography. The combination of these two requirements translates into extremely high computational times that often preclude most practical applications.

The objective of this project is to overcome the above limitations and produce models that can accurately simulate flooding at large scales. This will be achieved by developing techniques that make efficient use of high-resolution datasets and high-performance computing.

The successful candidate will join an exciting group of young researchers. He/she will gain access to a world leading supercomputing facility and will receive training in a range of relevant topics. As part of the PhD, the student is also expected to attend conferences and collaborate with other researchers nationally and internationally.

The successful candidate has a background in engineering or related areas (e.g. physics, applied mathematics, computer science). Experience with programming is also essential. Studentships are available for UK/EU candidates only.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Gustavo de Almeida, Water and Environmental Engineering research group, Email: g.dealmeida@soton.ac.uk

Please be aware that the academic selectors review applications as soon as they are received so please make sure to submit your application for consideration as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

This project is being run in participation with the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Infrastructure Systems (View Website). For details of our 4 Year PhD programme and further projects, please see http://www.cdt-sis.soton.ac.uk/
