Duties and responsibilities:

  • Contribute to postgraduate programmes in Africa and Gender Studies through teaching and curriculum design.
  • Engage in research supervision of postgraduate students in Africa Studies and Gender Studies at Honour’s, Master's and Doctoral levels.
  • Conduct and publish interdisciplinary research concerning current and relevant aspects of Africa and/or Gender.
  • Generate funding for research projects.
  • Engage in knowledge exchange and co-operation with academic institutions with an African and/or Gender Studies focus within the continent and internationally.
  • Actively promote engagement with stakeholders in the local community.
  • Proactively participate in the deepening of the University's Africa and Gender foci through promoting a greater involvement of Africa and Gender aware knowledge content in curricula at faculty and institutional levels.
  • Assist in providing service to the faculty and the institution through committee work and related work.
  • Assume administrative/managerial responsibilities at Director or Programme Director level should the need arise.

    Inherent requirements:

    Associate Professor

  • PhD or equivalent qualification in Africa Studies and/or Feminist/Gender Studies or a related discipline that supports the duties and responsibilities described above.
  • Experience as an external examiner for postgraduate students.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of research papers at national conferences, where there is evidence of peer review of papers.
  • Act as an editorial board member of high-quality national scholarly journals.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a specific scientific area of scholarship.
  • An NRF rating of C3 or equivalent status.
  • Proven experience in the supervision of graduated masters’ students.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
  • Serve as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels, OR show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.
  • Experience in academic administration at departmental and/or programme level.
  • Proven ability in the management of research and research fundraising.
  • Proven experience in the management of teaching and curriculum design.
  • Proven experience in building strategic partnerships and networks (nationally, on the African continent and internationally).
  •  

    Professor:

    • PhD or equivalent qualification in Africa Studies and/or Feminist/Gender Studies or a related discipline that supports the duties and responsibilities described above;
    • Experience as external examiner for masters’ and doctoral students.
    • Act as editorial board member of high-quality international/ISI/IBSS journals.
    • Proven international recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a particular area of academic scholarship (e.g. regularly serves as a reviewer for international/ISI/IBSS journals).
    • An NRF rating of C1 or C2 or equivalent status.
    • Demonstrated successful supervision of graduated master's and preferably graduated doctoral students.
    • Proven experience in delivering keynote addresses at national scholarly conferences.
    • Serve as a member of an international scholarly society OR an international committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels.
    • Experience in academic administration at departmental and/or programme level.
    • Proven ability in the management of research and research fundraising.
    • Proven experience in the management of teaching and curriculum design.
    • Proven experience in building strategic partnerships and networks (nationally, on the African continent and internationally.

     

    Required competencies:

    • Ability to conduct/manage/publish interdisciplinary research and raise funds for research.
    • Ability to teach and manage curricula at postgraduate level.
    • Ability to successfully supervise postgraduate students towards graduation.
    • Ability and sensitivity to function in a multicultural and multilingual working context.
    • Sensitivity to identity and gender issues including women's rights and the rights of sexual minorities, and related issues.
    • Ability to work independently but also within team context.
    • Adaptability, flexibility and creativity in problem-solving and dealing with human relations.
    • Organisational and administrative skills in the navigation of university processes for the management of postgraduate teaching, research and student supervision.

     

    Recommendations:

    • Proven teaching experience at tertiary level in the fields of Africa and feminist/Gender Studies.
    • Proven experience in the development of programmes and/or qualifications.
    • Ability to innovate in teaching and research.
    • Public intellectual profile.

    1 August 2018.
