Job Purpose

We are seeking a highly motivated individual for a Postdoctoral position to work on a five year MRC programme grant to continue our studies into the immune response to cytomegalovirus in health and disease. The programme is a central feature within our dynamic human immunology and immunotherapy research group which encompasses a wide range of fundamental and translational interests within infection, cancer and transplantation and holds superb access to the clinic.

The candidate will have a PhD in an area relevant to T cell immunology. Laboratory experience in immunology assays is essential with skills in cell biology, molecular biology and virology being desirable.

Techniques involved

  • Isolation and enrichment of T cells and other cell subsets from whole blood and tissue
  • Culture and transfection/transduction of primary T cells and cell lines
  • Flow cytometry including intracellular/intranuclear assays
  • ELISPOT
  • ELISA
  • Cytotoxicity assays
  • Cloning (RT-PCR, DNA sequencing, plasmid generation etc.)
  • RNA sequencing

 

Person Specification

  • First degree in life sciences and a PhD in an area relevant to immunology or virology.
  • Practical experience in primary cell isolation, culture and transfection (including T cells)
  • Experience of multi-colour flow cytometry is desirable
  • Experience in working with clinical samples
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Strong academic record commensurate with career to date/level of candidate’s post-doctoral experience.
  • The candidate will preferably have a track record of publishing in a related field to the project.
  • Ability to keep good records of research results eg laboratory notes and to present results clearly and appropriately
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Evidence of an ability to write to a standard required for research reports/publications
  • The ability to work and think independently and to contribute to the planning of a programme of scientific research
  • Effective organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines
  • Willingness to work flexibly, when necessary, to fulfil the needs of the research project
  • Evidence of an ability to work individually and in a research team
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety requirements within the laboratory setting
  • Familiarity with computer packages for data analysis including flow cytometry analysis software such as Kaluza and statistical packages such as Graphpad prism and SPSS. This must be allied to a sound good knowledge of data analysis and interpretation.
  • The ability and willingness to keep up with and have a working knowledge of the scientific literature in the field of the project
