Deputy Dean, Faculty of Design And Creative Technologies

Job Details

AUT is the fastest growing New Zealand university and ranked in the top 2% of world universities (QS rankings 2018)

Are you a leader in Teaching and Learning and experienced in recent curricular reform?

Lead, guide, empower and help take DCT to the next level

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is a young and dynamic university that offers a stimulating teaching and research environment with strong connections to business and industry.  AUT has over 29,000 students and 2,500 staff across our three teaching campuses and is located in New Zealand's largest city, Auckland.

AUT's Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies Faculty (DCT) is a transdisciplinary Faculty including disciplines in communication studies, computer science, design, engineering, mathematics, and an interdisciplinary area blending these fields with technology. DCT is an innovative, outward looking and inspiring hub of significant size and scale and is the largest Faculty within the University. Refreshed and open to new challenges, with 450 FTE staff DCT serves as the locus of activity for the schools of Art & Design, Communication Studies, Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Colab.

We are seeking to appoint a new Deputy Dean for the Faculty to support our ambitious Dean and DCT in producing great graduates. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the Faculty's strategy, planning, leadership and management with a particular focus on Learning and Teaching, whilst designing and overseeing strategies and actions that support the Dean and the Faculty Executive Team. The position also offers the potential for future career development in university management roles.

You will be hands-on and possess great vision, along with significant influencing and leadership skills and a keen attention to detail. You will be expected to enhance and focus the Faculty's learning and teaching core capabilities and lead and implement change of curricula. Supporting and deputising for the Dean when required, you will be a leader and advocate for the Faculty and the Dean and work collaboratively across the schools, helping to drive change, streamline processes and create efficiencies to make things happen. DCT is a high-performing area of the university and this role will take it to the next level.

This will be a professorial appointment with a substantive 5 year secondment to the role of Deputy Dean. You will have held a position such as Head of School, Associate Head of School Teaching and Learning, Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning or another senior academic position with a Teaching and Learning focus. Critically you will have led, overseen and delivered large scale projects; this will include recent significant interdisciplinary and multi-discipline curricula reform through innovative and modern approaches to student centred education. You will have an exceptional service record, which may include experience as the chair of an accreditation board or providing expert advice to other institutions in teaching and learning. Your research profile will be credible and your strong discipline knowledge and strengths will be supported with a relevant PhD in a field in DCT.

If you understand the importance of institutional context and want to make a genuine contribution to a high performing faculty, then this is the opportunity you have been looking for.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be appointed mid-2018 with the view to starting in early 2019.
