Job Details
You will be responsible for carrying out research in guard cell function and development. This will include investigating how stomata open and close in response to light. This work will make use of Arabidopsis and involve confocal microscopy, molecular biology and epidermal strip bioassay work. This work will be carried out in collaboration with Dr Deirdre McLachlan. The project will also focus on work in transgenic wheat plants in which a carbonic anhydrase gene has been manipulated. This will involve measurements of gas exchange and nutrient uptake into seed and infrared thermography. The research will also include experiments in Arabidopsis to understand the role of the recently characterise cGMP-PDE gene in stomatal signalling and other genes including carbonic anhydrase and other recently isolated from a screen for stomatal response mutants. This will involve cell biology and investigations of mitochondrial and peroxisome function. Overall the work will require thorough knowledge of molecular, cellular and physiological approaches and how they are applied to the investigation of stomatal function and development. The appointee will also help to supervise final year research project students.
You should have a PhD in stomatal biology and experience of gas exchange, confocal microscopy, assays of stomatal function and development and expertise in carbonic anhydrases and cGMP -PDE enzymes.
For informal enquiries about this position, please contact Professor Alistair Hetherington (email: Alistair.Hetherington@bristol.ac.uk).
The closing date for applications is 23:59 on 10 June 2018.
