Duties and responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and develop online/blended language-related teaching and learning design activities for the writing centre within the Unit for Language Development in the Centre for Teaching and Learning using multiple e-learning platforms and multimedia applications; namely Blackboard, Turn-it-In, Articulate, PowerPoint, Camtasia, Audio and video-editing software, and mobile  applications.
  • Proactively support UFS academic staff to pursue continuous curriculum and programme innovation, including alternative forms of delivery and blended online learning approaches.
  • Coordinate the quality assurance of online/blended learning design.
  • Submit reports on online/blended language-related teaching and learning design initiatives.
  • Develop workshop material related to the integration of technology into teaching and learning including, but not limited to,  the use of Learning Management Systems and Mobile Learning.
  • Implement innovative solutions to technological issues that arise in the writing centre, and the broader Unit for Language Development.
  • Build and maintain online databases.
  • Coordinate the development and maintenance of the writing centre's online booking system, as well as other online systems an initiatives.
  • Manage a variety of administrative tasks, such as correspondence and troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate the provision of stationary and equipment orders for the Unit for Language Development.
  • Perform a variety of general administration tasks using PeopleSoft.
  • Develop and maintain connections with other Higher Education institutions and participate in communities of practice relevant to teaching and learning design.
  • Coordinate the analysis and interpretation of international and national best practices in online/blended language-related teaching and learning.
  • Research the use of emerging and innovative technology in online/blended language-related teaching and learning practices.
  • Play an active role in self-development and take part in relevant self-development opportunities.

    Inherent requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (ICT/Education/ Higher Education/Applied Linguistics/TESOL or equivalent)
    • Two (2) to three (3) years' experience in computer-integrated teaching and learning and/or instructional design.
    • Two (2) to three (3) years' experience in the use of educational technology, including, but not limited to, the use of a Learning Management system.

     

    Required competencies:

    • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University's richly diverse working environment.
    • Advanced computer skills in, but not limited to, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, computer programming, and database management.
    • Knowledge of the use of educational technology.
    • Knowledge of the use of a Learning Management system.
    • Ability to work accurately.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Good administrative and organisational skills.
    • Ability to function under pressure.

     

    Recommendations:

    • A post-graduate qualification in a relevant field (ICT/Education/ Higher Education/Applied Linguistics/TESOL or equivalent).
    • One (1) to two (2) years' experience in language-related teaching and learning.
    • One (1) to two (2) years' experience in language/educational technology research.
    • One (1) to two (2) years' experience in a Higher Education environment.
    • Experience in web development.
    • Experience in developing and maintaining databases.
