Research Fellow in Weather and Climate Extremes for Agriculture

Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?

Do you have a background in weather and climate extremes, climate modelling, meteorology for agriculture, or a related field?

Do you have a flair for inter-disciplinary research?

Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive Universities?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a postdoctoral researcher to characterise weather and climate extremes in sub-Saharan Africa that are relevant to agriculture, determine how they may change in future climates and provide climate expertise to researchers in other disciplines. The position is part of a major new inter-disciplinary programme of work (GCRF-AFRICAP), which aims to develop and build capacity for sustainable agricultural practices within future climate. The project will establish academic partnerships between the UK and Africa, through institutions such as University of Leeds, Met Office and the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) in Africa. Partnerships will be developed with Met Services, research organisations and universities in the focus countries of Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and South Africa. The project will translate research into new agricultural policy and practices, resulting in real, tangible benefits to the region.

Supervised by Dr Cathryn Birch, you will use observations and novel, high-resolution regional climate model simulations to characterise extreme and high-impact events that are relevant to agriculture, such as heatwaves and extreme rainfall. You will work closely with crop modellers, social scientists, biologists and ecologists to develop future extreme weather and climate scenarios for input into biological, agricultural and crop models. You will develop capacity for research within African research institutions through participation in the organisation and delivery of bespoke interdisciplinary training courses and UK-Africa study exchanges. You will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in a quantitative physical science, such as Atmospheric Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics or Meteorology and have a background in meteorology and climate science.
