Job Details
The research will address the following:
1) The provision of new insights from using new equipment for the 3D characterisation of microstructure and chemical composition of the interfaces and grain boundaries;
2) An analysis of how the shear strength of the fibre / matrix interfaces varies with different processing routes and whether there is any relationship between the shear strength of the fibre / matrix interface and the overall macroscopic performance of the composite;
3) The quantitative relationship between the grain boundary secondary phase and dopant addition in both lead-based and lead-free ceramics and to understand whether the existence of such grain boundary phase affects the fracture strength of the material.
- Applicants must have (or expect to shortly obtain) a PhD in a relevant area of materials science and engineering or other relevant discipline.
- The candidate must be able to demonstrate a capacity for independent research work.
- The candidate should have an emerging track record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience of electron microscopy for defect analysis and phase determination.
- Experience with using micro- and nano-mechanical testing is highly desirable.
- The candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to function as part of a team.
- Willingness to travel for collaborative visits, and attending workshops.
- Excellent presentation skills (in both oral and writing).
