PURPOSE:
The purpose of this job is to support the Manager: NRF and SARChI Chair Support in providing a seamless financial administration process to support researchers who have been awarded various research grants. Aspects would include: -

The provision of superior service to the prestigious SARChI Chair Grant-holders in financially administering their various research grants and research project funding.

Financial administrative support to researchers in academic departments and Institutes, who have been awarded various research grants/ These grants would include those awarded by the National Research Foundation (NRF), THRIP (Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programmes), as well as Sandisa Imbewu and various other grant awarded by the Rhodes Research Office.

Supporting the manager by implementing the various grant funding mechanisms and claiming cycle processes required in managing the various income streams.

Timeous production of accurate financial reports, prepared on the basis on Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (GAAP) and International Accounting Standards (IAS), in accordance with funders’ specified requirements.
- Keeping abreast of VAT and Tax legislation to ensure the correct treatment of external funds, thereby maximising the cash flows of research projects.

In terms of Immigration Legislation (Act No. 13 of 2002 & Regulations), international staff members (non-SA citizens) have to comply with the provisions of the Act. This therefore means that the period of employment to non-SA citizens will be guided by the validity period of the work permit. In line with legislation governing employment of foreign nationals, employment contracts will be offered on the basis that a development plan would be implemented for the transfer of skills to a South African resident. The onus is on candidates to ensure that they are in possession of a valid work permit before the commencement of employment at the University, failing which the employment with Rhodes University will be terminated.
DESIRED:
- Previous experience in a pressurised accounting administrative environment where there were multiple demands and tight deadlines
- Previous experience in working in a computerised accounting environment.
- Previous experience in preparation of financial reports for audit and/or submission to external parties.
- Previous experience in research grant financial administration would be an advantage
- Studies towards a post matric or post matric qualification in a relevant field will an advantage
