PhD Studentship: A biomaterial-based tissue engineering approach for augmentation of articular cart
It is a clear aspiration that the work will offer a real opportunity to derive hyaline-like cartilage grafts using human skeletal cells and FDA-approved scaffolds, with tangible benefits in the subsequent clinical use of these tissue engineered cartilage products for the repair of articular cartilage defects in patients with early osteoarthritis. This, in turn, will help to improve long term patient outcome and contribute towards making significant cost-savings to the healthcare system by reducing the need for expensive joint replacement surgeries.
Candidate requirements: Applicants with a 1st or 2:1 degree in biomedical engineering or a biological/medical-related field, interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment that offers access to an array of research expertise by interactions with stem cell biologists, orthopaedic surgeons and bioengineers, are encouraged to apply.
If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Rahul Tare, Bioengineering research group, Email: R.Tare@soton.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0) 2381 205257.
Funding and Eligibility
This project is in competition with others for funding; the projects which receive the best applicants will be awarded a full studentship. This 3 year studentship covers home-rate tuition fees and provides an annual tax-free stipend at the standard EPSRC rate, which is £14,777 for 2018/19.
The funding is only available to UK citizens or EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the studentship and not mainly for the purpose of receiving full-time education. For further guidance on funding, please contact PGRapply.FEE@soton.ac.uk
