DEPARTMENT OF AFRICAN LANGUAGES
LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER IN SETSWANA (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Teach and develop undergraduate and postgraduate courses in linguistics and literature in Setswana;
- Supervise postgraduate students at honours, master’s and doctoral level, appropriate to the post level;
- Take a leading role in research;
- Participate in academic management, administration and other duties as required by the Head of the Department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
- A person with mother-tongue competence in Setswana;
- A Master’s degree in Setswana;
- A publication in an accredited journal or equivalent outputs;
- Evidence of successful student supervision at the appropriate level;
- Some academic administration experience / citizenship.
Senior Lecturer:
- A person with mother-tongue competence in Setswana;
- A doctoral qualification with specialization in Setswana;
- Teaching experience at a tertiary institution;
- Publications in accredited journals or equivalent outputs;
- Evidence of successful master’s and/or doctoral supervision;
- Conference papers delivered;
- Some academic administration experience / citizenship.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
Appropriate language and communication skills.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
Lecturer:
- Teaching experience at a tertiary institution;
- Conference papers delivered;
- Significant progress with own doctoral studies.
Senior Lecturer:
- Record of curriculum development experience;
- Conference papers delivered internationally;
- Membership of national or international bodies;
- Evidence of raising funds for research.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
